When I was born my sister was four and a half years old. Our mother came home from the hospital, put me in Caryn’s arms, and said, “This is your baby.” I’m sure she said it to help my sister get over the fact that I was usurping her place as baby of the family, but Caryn took it seriously! Long before she had four precious children of her own, I was the one she taught how to swim and bake and skate. For my ninth birthday she threw me an amazing party/treasure hunt. She made my halloween costumes. To this day, every time I put on gloves in the winter, I hear her voice in my head saying, “Put mittens on BEFORE you go outside.” To give me confidence, she told me I wouldn’t fall off my bike or off my skates if I was humming(!) She loved to compete, she loved to win, but she never begrudged a loss at cards or a board game.
I was thrilled to be the maid of honor at her wedding, and godmother to her son Patrick.
I can’t believe my sister is gone.
